Amazonian here (with my own opinion). I understand what you're saying. From my personal observation, it really depends on org and team. I had just amazing managers and those who were not... hmmm... good (politely speaking). In defense to the person who left a pile of substances, called code, they might have left because of the same reason — that one manager.
